Car Insurance Renewal in Ireland: What to Check Before You Renew
Compare car insurance renewal quotes in Ireland with a practical checklist for cover, excess, no-claims bonus, payment costs and switching without a gap.
The renewal email arrives while you are making dinner. You open it, look at the price and think, “I'll deal with that at the weekend.” Then the weekend fills up. By the time you look again, the decision feels like another job that has to be squeezed into an already busy day.
It is a familiar situation: you need the car for work, shopping and the people who depend on you, but organising its insurance rarely gets your best hour of the week.
A useful car insurance renewal check starts with three things: the total cost, the cover you actually need and the exact date your current policy ends. This guide gives you a simple way to compare your options without turning the kitchen table into an insurance office.
Start a renewal note before collecting quotes
Open one note on your phone and give it a clear name, such as “Car insurance renewal - October”. Put the expiry date, current insurer and policy number at the top. Add each quote to the same note rather than leaving information across emails, browser tabs and screenshots.
According to the CCPC's renewal guidance, insurers must send the renewal notice and no-claims discount certificate at least 20 working days before cover ends. Read any changed terms, and ask your provider if something in the documents is unclear.
Set aside two short sessions: one to collect information, another to make the decision. Our car renewal reminders guide explains how to keep preparation separate from the deadline itself.
Compare the cover, not just the headline price
Imagine two quotes on your screen. One is cheaper, so you are ready to choose it. Before paying, you notice that its excess is higher and an extra you wanted is missing. The first number did not tell the whole story.
The CCPC's car insurance guide explains the main cover types and policy features. Third-party cover, third-party fire and theft, and comprehensive insurance offer different protection. Comprehensive does not mean every possible event is covered. Read the exclusions and conditions.
Use this comparison sheet as a set of questions for each provider:
| Item to record | Question to ask |
|---|---|
| Cover type | Am I comparing the same level of insurance? |
| Excess | What would I contribute towards a relevant claim, including any additional excess? |
| Drivers and use | Does the policy cover the people and journeys I need it for? |
| Windscreen cover | Is it included, and what limits or excess apply? |
| Breakdown or replacement car | Is it included, optional or subject to conditions? |
| No-claims bonus | What protection is offered, and what does it actually protect? |
| Total payable | What is the full cost, including payment charges and optional extras? |
Leave a blank marked “ask” wherever you cannot find the answer. A blank is more useful than an assumption.
Keep the information consistent across quotes
The CCPC's advice on getting insurance quotes says to answer insurers' questions fully and honestly, check quote validity and compare options. You can approach insurers directly or use a broker. Check the full cost of instalments against an annual payment, rather than comparing a monthly figure with an annual one.
For your own comparison, note the details you used and the date you requested each quote. If a provider asks something you do not understand, ask them to explain it. Do not guess an answer simply to finish the form.
Check what happens to your no-claims bonus
A no-claims bonus is worth understanding before you switch. Keep the certificate with the renewal documents and ask the proposed insurer what evidence it needs. Do not assume that a feature with the word “protected” means the next premium cannot rise; ask the provider to explain the protection and its limits.
Write down your question before calling. “What happens to my discount if I make a claim?” is easier to work through than trying to decode a policy phrase while someone waits on the phone.
If you switch, line up the handover
Confirm the new policy's start date and time before cancelling existing cover. Check your current policy's cancellation and auto-renewal instructions, and keep written confirmation. Cancelling a payment instruction alone is not a substitute for following the insurer's policy-cancellation process.
The CCPC explains that switching at renewal can avoid the cancellation penalties that may arise mid-policy. Ask both providers about the steps relevant to your situation. Do not leave yourself guessing whether cover is active on the morning you need to drive.
Your final renewal checklist
- I have recorded the current expiry date and time.
- My comparison uses consistent information and the cover I need.
- I understand the excess, exclusions and optional extras.
- I have checked the total payable and each quote's expiry.
- I know what no-claims evidence is required.
- Any cancellation or auto-renewal arrangements are confirmed.
- The chosen cover and start time are confirmed in writing.
Once it is settled, save the documents and record the actual cost. Our car running costs guide helps you put this annual bill into a monthly budget.
Car insurance renewal FAQs
Should I automatically accept my renewal quote?
Give yourself time to review it and compare suitable alternatives. There is no promise that switching will be cheaper or better; the aim is an informed choice that fits your circumstances.
Is the cheapest policy always the best option?
No. A lower price may come with different cover or conditions. Use the comparison questions above and ask the insurer or broker to clarify anything important to you.
