Renew Motor Tax Online in Ireland: PIN, Documents and Steps
Renew motor tax online in Ireland with a simple guide to the official website, finding your PIN, payment checks and keeping your confirmation organised.
It is Sunday evening. You have finally sat down, and the small disc on the windscreen comes back into your head. You remember that motor tax is due, but not where you put the letter with the PIN. What should have been a short task turns into a search through a drawer, your inbox and a photograph you think you took weeks ago.
The frustrating part is often getting ready, rather than making the payment.
To renew motor tax online in Ireland, start at motortax.ie with your registration number, PIN, email address and payment details. If something does not match your vehicle or ownership record, resolve it through the official service before trying to work around it.
Put the essentials beside you first
The official Motor Tax Online service lists the details needed for an online transaction. Gather them before you begin:
- Your vehicle registration number.
- Your motor tax PIN.
- An email address you can access.
- A credit or debit card and its billing details.
Use a private place for the task. Keep the PIN and payment details out of shared screenshots or messages. If another person helps, you can still enter those details yourself.
Make one small note for the outcome: the registration, date paid, amount and confirmed expiry. You do not need to store sensitive payment information in that note.
How to find your motor tax PIN
Motor Tax Online says a PIN is included in the renewal notice. For a second-hand vehicle taxed before, it identifies the PIN as the last six digits of the Vehicle Registration Certificate number. For a brand-new or imported vehicle being taxed for the first time, its guidance uses the last six characters of the chassis number on the RF100 form.
Check the current PIN instructions and recovery link for your situation. Use the official recovery route if you do not have the right document. Avoid repeatedly trying numbers from unrelated paperwork.
It helps to decide what you are doing before searching: renewing tax on your current car, taxing a recently bought used car, or taxing a new or imported vehicle for the first time. Similar-looking documents do not always serve the same purpose.
Renew online in five manageable steps
1. Start from the official website
Type motortax.ie into your browser, or follow the Motor Tax link from the Department of Transport's Vehicle Services page. This gives you a dependable starting point instead of relying on a payment link in an unexpected message.
2. Enter your registration and PIN
Have the registration document beside you so you can check the details carefully. If the record shown does not look right, stop and use the service's help options. Finishing quickly is less useful than being sure you are dealing with the correct vehicle.
3. Review the period and amount offered
Read the options shown for your vehicle. The Department's payments and renewal guidance explains that non-annual discs carry a surcharge and late payment can involve arrears. Compare the total cost before choosing a period, rather than assuming shorter payments add up to the annual amount.
For your budget, record the actual amount and next due date. Our car running costs guide shows how to prepare for bills that do not arrive every month.
4. Complete payment and check the result
Follow your bank's payment-verification prompts if requested. Motor Tax Online explains that card payments may need additional bank authentication. If you get stuck, use its published guidance and your bank's support.
If the screen stalls, check for a transaction confirmation before attempting payment again. Keep a note of what happened and contact the official service if the outcome is unclear.
5. Save the confirmation and update your reminder
Keep the confirmation somewhere you will find it again, and follow the official delivery and display instructions for the disc. Motor Tax Online says it posts discs within four working days of an online transaction; that is a dispatch timeframe, not a guaranteed arrival date.
Put a reminder ahead of the next expiry while the details are still in front of you. Our car renewal reminders guide helps keep that preparation from slipping back into the Sunday-evening pile.
If you have just bought the car
Ownership transfer is a separate task from paying motor tax. The Department's online ownership-transfer service supports eligible private-to-private transfers, with steps for both seller and buyer. Follow the official instructions and check the recorded details before relying on the renewal process.
If ownership has not updated or the online service cannot handle your case, contact the appropriate motor tax office through the official website. Our used-car buying checklist helps you plan these handover details before collection.
What if the tax has expired or the car is off the road?
Do not assume that leaving a car unused automatically clears a tax bill. The official Vehicle Services page links to the separate off-road declaration process. Late tax, a change of owner and an off-road declaration are different situations. Ask the motor tax office which process applies if you are unsure.
This guide is for organising a standard online transaction, not deciding whether a vehicle may legally be used while tax is overdue or a disc is in the post. Check the official requirements before driving.
Motor tax renewal FAQs
Can I renew without the reminder letter?
Start with the official PIN-help instructions above. The recovery options depend on the vehicle and transaction; you do not necessarily need to find the original envelope to take the next step.
Does paying motor tax renew my insurance or NCT?
No. Keep the three records separate. A completed tax transaction does not establish that insurance or an NCT is current. Our NCT checklist covers preparing for that appointment.
Can I pay motor tax through KarJay?
No. KarJay is coming soon and is being built to help organise vehicle information and dates. Motor tax transactions belong on the official service. We do not ask for your motor tax PIN or process this payment.
Finish the task, then put it down
There is a small relief in knowing the payment is confirmed, the record is saved and the next date is already in the calendar. You can close the tabs and get back to your evening.
That is the feeling we want to help bring to everyday car ownership. Join KarJay's early-access list to follow our progress in Ireland.
